The scientific-technological laboratory “Optimal Transport Systems”

The scientific-technological laboratory “Optimal Transport Systems” works on the development of innovative methods and tools in transport planning. They are based on the advanced technology of the open source multi-agent simulation software, the use of geo-analytic data on the movement of cellular network subscribers, the use of genetic algorithms to optimize transport systems, and the use of social technologies and crowdsourcing (public participation) to keep models actual.

By applying these methods and technologies, laboratory “Optimal Transport Systems” creates high precision models of transport systems of cities and metropolitan areas. Such models can become part of an integrated decision support system in conjunction with the concept of “smart city”, which will allow to solve problems of strategic planning and optimization, as well as to assess and propose local and operational changes to the road network and public transport.

Problems that the laboratory solves by using transport models:
• Optimization of public transport route networks
• Elaboration of measures for road network development
• Development of high-speed ground transportation (BRT, LRT) implementation projects
• Evaluation of transport accessibility of points of interest and social facilities

The main projects:
  • Global MATSim scenario for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia
  • Transport service concept for the 2019 Universiade
  • MATSim scenario for Krasnoyarsk
  • Analysis of the proposed BRT corridors in Moscow
  • Pilot model of St. Petersburg
  • Research and development of GOST "Traffic forecasts on toll roads"
  • Research and development of GOST "Public automobile roads. Toll collection complex arrangement and facilities requirements"
